Trees and Riparian Mix Plantings in the Park

South Londonderry Township was awarded a $90,000 grant as a result of a $12.6 million penalty imposed on Sunoco Logistics for permit violations during construction of the Mariner East 2 pipeline. Pennsylvania DEP used the penalty to create opportunities for grants to communities through which Mariner East 2 passes. South Londonderry Township qualified and is using the grant funds for installation of riparian buffers at the Community Park. The Township Supervisors awarded the contract to ArcheWild, www.archewild.com, as a result of the competitive bid process.

The trees being planted are native and include red maple, sugar maple, serviceberry, butternut hickory, eastern redbud, tulip, dogwoods, and American sycamore. The planting alongside Spring Creek is a riparian mix that includes big bluestem, black-eyed Susan, swamp milkweed, several different asters, joe pye, great blue lobelia. This diverse mix of grasses and forbs have extensive wildlife and pollinator value. They will provide food and cover for many of our songbirds. When the natural area was first planted by the Township’s Environmental Committee members, the natural area was filled with grasses and flowering native plants for several years. It is exciting to be able in the near future to observe the return of many of these plants.
